President Salih Meets Swedish Foreign Minister: Int’l and Regional Action Vital to Mitigate Tensions in the Region and Address Climate Change Crisis

On Thursday, September 23, 2021, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih met with the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ann Linde on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting was held at the His Excellency President Salih’s residence in New York.
Iraqi- Swedish ties were discussed during the meeting, and how best to promote these relations in all sectors.
The support provided for the Iraq by Sweden in the humanitarian field as well as in the fight against terrorism within the global Coalition to defeat ISIS was hailed during the meeting. Reference was made to the large Iraqi community in Sweden.
Iraq seeks to promote its security and its stability, and works toward ensuring fair and free election which is set to be held on 10 October, President Salih said, while noting that Iraq looks forward to strengthening peace, security and stability in the region, and to having further coordination with the international community for this goal.
Furthermore, he underscored that International cooperation should be enhanced to address today’s challenges, which first and foremost among are combating the terrorism and violence, addressing climate change and protecting of environment.
Advantage should be taken of international expertise to support the Iraqi national plans to rehabilitate Mesopotamia in terms of environment and establish the concepts of green economy, he said.
